OK! Back Under The Bus!
Well, just as things were beginning to look up they began to to get worse. Funny how that seems to be a recurring theme of my life. If my life were a book, the leaflet would read “The story of a young man desperately trying to make it in the real world, he sees success repeatedly within his grasp and repeatedly he watches it fade from sight. Pressed on by his own determination he is hindered by family concerns, a tumultuous love life, his own struggle with finding the right path for himself and a world in recession.” Not a very compelling read, I don’t think. I certainly wouldn’t be interested in reading that.
I’ve gotten closer to finding a place to live. I am uncertain how committed my future roommateis to the success of our search as he doesn’t seem to be doing anything to further it. I fear I will end up on my own again. In fact, it’s looking highly probable. I had found a place monday afternoon and sent the realtor an email about it. I got an email today stating that it had already been rented. Jerks. That was probably my best bet at living somewhere other than the darkest recesses of the ghetto.
I’ve been doing okay with my part time job, but I’ve been hoping that they would either extend my hours or I would get another permanent part time position someplace else. Neither of these scenarios are coming to fruition and I fear this will eventually hinder my search for living quarters.
In yet another, smaller defeat- two of my favorite fighters and one of my heroes lost their battle this weekend. It was sad to watch. It just sank my mood that much more.
Everyone is asking what I want for x-mas. What I want? A place to live, a steady source of income and the ability to put a few nice tasting things in my belly on occasion. Seems no one is willing or able to supply that… so it looks like CDs, Video games, tshirts and socks for Christmas… hurrah.
On the up side, it did snow really hard for about 8 minutes yesterday and that made me feel really good. Also made me feel like skipping work- but I went anyway. I’m hoping to bake some cookies and make a seafood stew sometime this weekend. Might have to hit up the Vietnamese restaurant again too…mmm noodles. I think if it weren’t for the small, private pleasures in this world I’d have none at all. Well, time to get off of here and head for my one true indulgence- Samuel Smith’s Winter Welcome Ale. MMMMMmmmmMM !
It’s Finally Over…
We’ll the people have spoken and as John McCain noted in his concession speech, “they have spoken overwhelmingly”. Still, as I guess we’ve come to expect in this day and age, the hating continues. I find it absolutely remarkable that while the campaigns were going people often said they wanted someone who was bi-partisan and would “reach across the aisle”. But now that it’s over those same people seem to be reverting to partisan politics as usual. I understand your guy lost, Republicans- but can’t you just stop for a second and say “well, we didn’t win- but let’s make the most of it. Let’s stay on this guy and make sure he does his job. Let’s do our part to help turn this country around.”? I’m sure there are some of you out there who might take this approach and you are indeed true Americans putting your own self-interests aside to work for the common good of all alongside those whom you may not agree with.
The McCain campaign was about change and getting America on the right path. If you truly believed in that spirit then you have no business assailing, slandering or otherwise being negative towards the president elect. Do you think that negativity is going to help build a strong, united America? I’ve heard everything from “Obama bought those votes” (absolutely absurd. How deep would his pockets have to be to pay off several million people?) to “The country is doomed now” (equally preposterous- There was so little difference between the two candidates in the primaries that they could have run on the same ticket).
When I talk to republicans about why they think Obama is going to make a bad president the responses usually pertain to his lack of executive experience (duly noted. but that’s why he’s going to have to have a really strong Cabinet- as long as he has the necessary info he is able to make an intelligent, informed decision as much as McCain and far more so than Bush), his different stance on religion-based issues(these are irrelevant. The government has no say in what religion does and vice versa. Besides, if McCain were elected he wouldn’t overturn Roe V. Wade or outlaw gay marriage. Bush has been there for 8 years and hasn’t done either one- there are just more important issues at hand) and his supposed Socialist programs (which, if you have even a meager understanding of how a Socialist system works you would see that he is far from Socialist).
So what’s the big deal? Why can’t we just say “good game” and move along? It’s this nagging negative attitude that has kept America from progressing as rapidly as other countries. We could accomplish so much more if people would put aside petty grievances. I also feel that it is not the constituency’s fault that this attitude seems to prevail. I think a lot of these talking heads like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reily, etc. are the source and cause of such dispositions. Day in and day out they nit pick every detail and sit back and criticize. If they are so great and so perfectly correct about everything, then why don’t they RUN FOR PRESIDENT?!?!? They don’t because they are just commentators. The world isn’t really like they say it is and doesn’t work the way they say it does.
All that having been said, I think the system is still broken. I am willing to give Obama and the Democrats the chance to prove me wrong. I would love nothing more than to see the US returned to a state of strong financial standing and have it and it’s policies be held in high regard by other nations of the world. I think some things that need to be done will be done. Whether or not they are done well will be a key factor. I personally think that Americans, being unwilling and unable to change the government in its current state and the government not willing to let Americans change it, must rise up and wipe the slate clean and begin anew. This is not a call for violent revolution. Just the opposite. The constitution states that our government is run by the people. If we, the people, have had so many complaints for so long- why have things stayed the same? Why do we allow bureaucrats to block the way and slow the process of the change we demand?
I’ll concede that on average most Americans do not know enough to capably judge what should be done when it comes to running the country. We are not well enough educated, we are highly susceptible to misinformation and we generally fail to consider the long term effects of anything we do (which is why we find ourselves in a failing economy, in a failing war and a stagnant republic). Despite these facts, I feel that there are enough capable citizens and enough outlets for proper education that this could easily be changed should the public be willing to accept this change (that is to say, they must be willing to educate themselves).
Sadly, America has become the land of distractions where the individual has become more important than the whole and self is usually set before others. People would rather watch a shitty sit-com than discuss intellectual matters or engage each other in challenging conversation. Our minds have been corrupted by laziness and greed and our ears have been shut to the pleas of the needy. America, once the land of the free and home of the brave has become the land of the wanton and home of the greedy. Neither republican nor democrat will change this.
Crazy People
I’ve spent the better part of the day trolling political forums and websites and news stations/ websites and have come to the following conclusions:
The people who are participating publicly (newscasters/ commentators/forum posters/ guys in coffee shops) in the nation’s political dialogue are the intellectual dregs of the nation. They use flawed logic and reprehensible rhetoric to prove invalid or otherwise bogus points regarding various facets of the american political scene.
The general public seems more concerned in supporting their rep/dem candidate and assaulting the opposing candidate while completely ignoring the other 3 or 4 candidates on the ballot.
Republican arguments against Obama boil down to: He’s a socialist/ He gets his money from terrorists/ He is Muslim and therefor unfit to lead the country/ He has no experience (usually unclarified and unqualified). Obviously misinformation is the ONLY means of disimminating info in America. And what, specifically, kind of experience do republicans want Obama to have? I don’t recall EITHER candidate having been president before. Therefore, neither one has experience.
Republicans apparently don’t understand what socialism is.
Democrats- your candidates are playing nice… so why are you talking so much trash?
Neither side will concede that the other has valid points.
We would all be better off to either elect a third party or just suspend the presidency for 4 years and let things run their own course.
America needs to spend more money on education. Both candidates have proposed to “help education”. I have seen way too many people post things online that are made up of things that bear a slight resemblence to “sentences”. I think Americans ought to be faced with the fear of speaking exclusively in spanish until they can properly utilize the english language. How retarded do you have to be to fail at YOUR OWN NATIVE TONGUE?
It also seems that Democrats believe, on the whole, that Obama is going to be a cure-all for American politics. The system is broken kids…go play outside.
Election Day Shennanigans
Well, it isn’t even 10am here in the Old Dominion and already there is a laundry list of screw ups at polling places. I was hoping it wouldn’t go down like this, especially with us being a key player in this election. A lot of eyes are going to be focused on us (and Pennsylvania and Ohio as well) and I fear that we come out looking like Florida did in 2000.
Here is a link to the already reported problems occurring in the metro Richmond and surrounding areas. Thanks to NBC for keeping track… I think.

If I were a conspiracy theorist I would infer that from the districts facing the most trouble with voting that the votes for Obama were being suppressed. But I am not a conspiracy theorist and I don’t believe that’s whats happening. I can’t wait for someone to go on the news and say it though. If there is ANY contention over who got the vote in VA, you heard it here first: SOMEONE will claim that there was tampering to suppress Obama’s votes. Hopefully no one in the Obama campaign will be that petty.
I’d also like to say that I had no trouble at my polling place this morning and I live across the street from the county seat and in a very large suburban district. I was in and out faster than I could in and out of a Starbucks.
I may be updating this post as the news day progresses and pass some comments on the dumb things that will inevitably be said and done.
Thanks for reading, good luck with the voting.
Edit: Additionally, lots of places are giving away free shit for voting. I already got my free starbucks and free WaWa coffees. I’m hitting up ben and jerry’s after work then scouting for more freebies. I hear one bar has $1.00 of drafts during happy hour if you show your sticker. Sounds like this could get messy.
